EQT: The Best Appalachian Gas Machine Priced Like Peak Is Normal
At $54.96, EQT commands a $34.38B market cap and $43.53B enterprise value for Appalachian gas leverage that swung from $5.27B to $8.64B in revenues and $230.58M to $2.04B in net income in one year. With 80.7% gross margins, $7.86B of debt and data center hope in the price, this is a Pass on peak earnings.
Founded in 1888 in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, EQT turned Appalachian rock into a $8.64B revenue machine in FY2025 with $3.25B of operating income and $2.04B of net income, after a FY2024 that managed only $5.27B, $685.30M and $230.58M on the same 1,523 person platform. That whiplash, set against $41.79B of assets, $7.86B of total debt and just $110.80M of cash, is why 80.7% gross margins and a 195.6% five year return still leave the stock at $54.96, stuck between a $47.94 low and a $68.24 high.
Unlike oil cushioned EOG Resources or Gulf Coast levered Comstock, EQT is pure Appalachian gas with gathering, transmission and marketing wrapped around the wellhead, priced at 12.75x trailing earnings, 13.96x forward earnings and 6.22x EV to EBITDA for negative 3.9% revenue growth while qualitative chatter about long term gas deals and data center demand promises a contracted future that has not yet arrived in cash.
History & Ownership
EQT Corporation was founded in 1888 in the Appalachian gas belt and operated for more than a century as Equitable Resources Inc., a Pittsburgh region utility and producer, before changing its name to EQT Corporation in February 2009. The headquarters remains in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania with 1,523 employees, and the business description has narrowed to its modern form: exploration, production, gathering and transmission of hydrocarbons and natural gas, selling natural gas, natural gas liquids and oil to marketers, utilities and industrial customers in the Appalachian Basin, plus marketing services, contractual pipeline capacity management, hedging and propane storage and distribution terminals.
The arc is utility to shale pure play to integrated gas machine. EQT rode the Marcellus and Utica boom to become the largest Appalachian producer, bulked up by acquiring Rice Energy, the Toby Rice family vehicle, then in 2018 separated its midstream system as Equitrans Midstream Corporation. That separation was reversed in a full circle deal announced in March 2024 and closed in July 2024, a definitive merger creating what the company called America's only large scale, vertically integrated natural gas business with an initial enterprise value over $35B, per ir.eqt.com, March 2024. The strategic logic was cost curve dominance, not empire building. The combined company projected an unlevered NYMEX free cash flow breakeven of approximately $2.00 per MMBtu plus more than $425M of annual synergies, per ir.eqt.com, July 2024, a direct challenge to diversified oil majors like EOG Resources and to Haynesville gas peers like Comstock Resources that lack that captive gathering and transmission footprint.
Scale built through the cycle
The XBRL accounts show how much of EQT's current $34.38B market capitalization and $43.53B enterprise value at $54.96 was assembled in the last cycle. Revenues were $3.06B in FY2021, $7.50B in FY2022, $6.91B in FY2023, $5.27B in FY2024 and $8.64B in FY2025. Net income moved from a loss of $1.16B in FY2021 to $1.77B in FY2022, $1.74B in FY2023, $230.58M in FY2024 and $2.04B in FY2025. Operating income traced the same commodity leverage, from a loss of $1.36B in FY2021 to $2.72B in FY2022, $2.31B in FY2023, $685.30M in FY2024 and $3.25B in FY2025. Assets expanded from $21.61B in FY2021 to $22.67B in FY2022, $25.29B in FY2023, $39.83B in FY2024 and $41.79B in FY2025, while stockholders equity grew from $10.03B to $11.17B, $14.77B, $20.60B and $23.75B. Liabilities ended FY2025 at $14.43B against $15.55B in FY2024, with cash at $110.80M. The stock reflects that volatility, with a 5 year return of 195.6% against a 1 year return of 8.7%, trading between $47.94 and $68.24 over 52 weeks with a $67.38 analyst target mean and a strong_buy recommendation.
Widely held, operator led
Ownership is an institutional fortress with no controlling holder disclosed. Institutions hold 95.81% of shares across 1,492 institutions, with 96.68% of the float held by institutions, against insider ownership of 0.90%. That split leaves public market discipline, not founder control, as the governance mechanism, in contrast to smaller gas E&Ps where management owns a blocking stake.
Management character is defined by President and Chief Executive Officer Toby Z. Rice, the Rice Energy operator who returned via acquisition and then drove the Equitrans recombination. The pitch is operational technology, drilling and completion efficiency, marketing optimization and curtailment strategy rather than commodity price calling. Second quarter 2026 illustrated the style, with sales volume of 634 Bcfe above the high end of guidance and capital expenditures of $666M, 9% below the low end of guidance on efficiency gains and lower infrastructure spending, per ir.eqt.com, July 2026. For investors the read through is consistent: a 138 year old utility descendant now run as a shale manufacturing and pipeline integration business, where credibility rests on holding per unit operating costs near low-end guidance levels and converting Appalachian scale into free cash flow through the trough.
Business Model & Strategy
EQT Corporation, founded in 1888 and headquartered in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, with 1,523 employees, is a pure play Appalachian natural gas machine. It explores for, produces, gathers and transmits hydrocarbons, and sells natural gas, natural gas liquids and oil to marketers, utilities and industrial customers in the Appalachian Basin. Around that core it runs marketing services, contractual pipeline capacity management, risk management and hedging, plus propane storage and distribution terminals. At $54.96, for a $34.38B market capitalization and $43.53B enterprise value, you are buying scale in the Marcellus and Utica, not optionality in the Permian.
What it sells and to whom
EQT reports as an integrated gas operation, not a collection of segments. Upstream wells feed owned and contracted gathering and transmission, which feed firm sales to investment grade utilities, LNG corridors and, increasingly, in basin power. That is different from oily peers like EOG Resources, which can lean on oil cuts when gas collapses, and from Haynesville peers like Comstock, which live and die on Gulf Coast egress. EQT lives and dies on Appalachian differentials, which is why control of transport matters as much as the rock.
The SEC record shows the engine and its cyclicality. Revenues were $7.50B in FY2022, $6.91B in FY2023, $5.27B in FY2024 and $8.64B in FY2025. Operating income moved from $2.72B to $2.31B to $685.30M to $3.25B over the same period, with net income of $1.77B, $1.74B, $230.58M and $2.04B. Assets expanded from $21.61B in FY2021 to $41.79B in FY2025, while stockholders equity grew from $10.03B to $23.75B. In 2025, operating cash flow was $5.13B against $2.29B of capital expenditure, leaving $2.84B of free cash flow, with $389.63M paid in cash dividends. Total debt was $7.86B against $9.37B a year earlier, with cash of $110.80M, evidence of a post deal deleveraging push. Gross margin of 80.7% with operating margin of 23.4% and profit margin of 29.2% underlines operating leverage to price once volumes are flowing.
| SEC FY fact | FY2022 | FY2023 | FY2024 | FY2025 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Revenues | $7.50B | $6.91B | $5.27B | $8.64B |
| Operating income | $2.72B | $2.31B | $685.30M | $3.25B |
| Net income | $1.77B | $1.74B | $230.58M | $2.04B |
Recurring versus one time
There is no subscription here. Every Mcf must be produced, moved and repriced. That makes revenue recurring in volume but commodity in price, smoothed only by hedges, firm transport spreads and fees. Marketing and capacity management add a steadier, fee like layer, but the P and L still hinges on realized gas. In the first quarter of 2026, EQT sold 618 Bcfe with realized pricing of $5.27 per Mcf before hedges and $5.07 per Mcf after NYMEX hedges, at total per unit operating costs of $1.09 per Mcfe, per morningstar.com, April 2026. Revenue for the quarter was $3.378B, up 94.2% from $1.739B a year earlier, with GAAP earnings of $1.487B or $2.36 per share, per rttnews.com, April 2026. The spread between $5.07 and $1.09 is the business.
Strategy and flywheel
Strategy is scale density plus low cost plus premium demand. Drill long laterals in a concentrated footprint, drive down per unit costs through contiguous acreage, water, sand and midstream integration including Equitrans, then convert that cost advantage into firm egress and long duration sales. Lower cost funds more free cash flow, which funds debt reduction and consolidation, which adds more low cost inventory and transport, which unlocks better pricing.
- Lock in basin breaking demand: EQT is sole supplier to the 4.4 GW Homer City Energy Campus, targeted to begin generation in 2027, per nasdaq.com, July 2025, and is set to supply about 800 MMcf per day to the Shippingport Power Station conversion in western Pennsylvania, per eastdaley.com, July 2025.
- Export the molecule without building pipe: two 10 year utility deals for 800 MMcf per day to Duke Energy and 400 MMcf per day to Southern Company starting in 2027, per finance.yahoo.com, June 2025, plus about 1.4 Bcf per day of firm Pennsylvania power supply enabling 2% to 3% base growth, per spglobal.com, July 2025.
- Price to power, not to the hub: a 10 year, 325,000 Dth per day deal to the CPV Shay Energy Center in West Virginia, entering service as early as 2031 and linked to PJM power prices for a premium to in basin indexes, per finance.yahoo.com, July 2026. Management lifted 2026 sales volume guidance to 2,375 to 2,450 Bcfe, per ir.eqt.com.
If it works, EQT stops being a spot Marcellus price taker and becomes a contracted Appalachian utility with shale upside, collecting a power and transport premium while holding costs near $1.09 per Mcfe. If gas breaks, the flywheel runs in reverse, which is why the balance sheet move from $9.37B to $7.86B of debt matters as much as any data center headline.
Segments & Products
EQT Corporation is a single basin gas machine. Founded in 1888 and headquartered in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, the company explores for, produces, gathers and transmits hydrocarbons centered entirely on the Appalachian Basin. At $54.96, with a $34.38B market cap and $43.53B enterprise value, EQT is priced as the scale natural gas pure play in the eastern U.S., the inverse of a diversified major or a Permian oil merchant.
There are no reportable segment splits to hide behind. The product mix is natural gas first, with natural gas liquids and oil as secondary wellhead streams, plus an integrated commercial layer that matters more than it sounds: marketing services, contractual pipeline capacity management, risk management and hedging, and owned propane storage and distribution terminals. End markets are marketers, utilities and industrial customers located in Appalachia, which makes EQT structurally long in basin demand and structurally short in basin takeaway unless it creates its own pull through.
| SEC XBRL, fiscal year | Revenues | Operating income | Net income |
|---|---|---|---|
| FY2023 | $6.91B | $2.31B | $1.74B |
| FY2024 | $5.27B | $685.30M | $230.58M |
| FY2025 | $8.64B | $3.25B | $2.04B |
The table explains the business model in one glance. Revenues swung from $6.91B to $5.27B to $8.64B in three years, while operating income collapsed to $685.30M in FY2024 before rebounding to $3.25B in FY2025. That is commodity leverage amplified by an 80.7% gross margin and 23.4% operating margin profile, run with just 1,523 employees. When gas cooperates, the conversion is violent. When it does not, as in FY2024 with only $230.58M of net income, the P and L reminds you EQT is a price taker.
Pricing power: no wellhead pricing power, growing delivered pricing power
EQT cannot set Henry Hub or Appalachian basis. What it can do is optimize around it, and second quarter 2026 shows the playbook. Sales volume was 634 Bcfe, above the high end of guidance on strong well performance and fewer curtailments, with capital expenditures of $666M, 9% below the low end of guidance, per ir.eqt.com, July 2026. Realized differential was -$0.67, favorable to guidance despite widening basis because of marketing optimization and curtailment strategy, with total per unit operating costs of $1.03 per Mcfe, per ir.eqt.com, July 2026. In a quarter when natural gas averaged only $2.89 per MMBtu, the company still printed $330M of free cash flow, per finance.yahoo.com, July 2026. That is the bull case in miniature: cost and marketing execution as a synthetic hedge.
Hedging remains part of the kit, disclosed as a core activity alongside pipeline capacity management, but the structural fix is contracting demand at a premium to in basin indexes. The 10 year definitive agreement to supply 325,000 Dth per day to the CPV Shay Energy Center in Doddridge County, West Virginia, links pricing to PJM power prices rather than a conventional gas index, providing uplift to in basin pricing, per ir.eqt.com, July 2026. It is a template for turning electrons back into molecules.
Growth drivers: in basin power load, not rig count
- Utility baseload: two 10 year deals to start in 2027 for 800 MMcf per day to Duke Energy and 400 MMcf per day to Southern Company, per finance.yahoo.com, June 2025, lock investment grade utility pull through for a decade.
- Data center and repowered coal: exclusive supply to the 4.4 GW Homer City Energy Campus with up to 665,000 MMBTUs per day of supply redundancy, per nasdaq.com, July 2025, plus about 800 MMcf per day to the Shippingport Power Station conversion supporting on site data center load and PJM sales, per eastdaley.com, July 2025.
- Operational compounding: 2026 production guidance raised by about 90 Bcfe at the midpoint on base production outperformance from midstream compression, per finance.yahoo.com, July 2026, capped by drilling the longest lateral in shale history at over 29,000 feet, per finance.yahoo.com, July 2026.
Put together, EQT is converting regional demand growth into contracted volumes that defend against a weak Appalachian cash market while preserving torque to higher gas. That is why the out years, not the next strip print, carry the equity debate.
Operations & Go-to-Market
EQT Corporation, founded in 1888 and headquartered in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, is the Appalachian Basin pure play. It explores for, produces, gathers and transmits hydrocarbons, overwhelmingly natural gas, with associated natural gas liquids and oil. That gas focus is the core differentiator versus Permian and Bakken oil weighted E&Ps and versus integrated majors: EQT lives and dies on Appalachian gas volumes, in basin pricing and Henry Hub leverage, not oil cuts.
Footprint: upstream density plus pipes and compression
The physical plant is concentrated, not global. Production comes from the Marcellus and Utica shales in Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Ohio, sold to marketers, utilities and industrial customers located in the Appalachian Basin. Headcount was 1,523, a lean roster for a company that generated $8.64B in FY2025 revenues on an SEC EDGAR basis and held $41.79B in total assets. Capital intensity is drilling and completions led: capital expenditure was -$2.29B in 2025, -$2.25B in 2024 and -$2.02B in 2023, funded by $5.13B, $2.83B and $3.18B of operating cash flow in those same years.
Delivery is where EQT now separates from a typical E&P. After closing the Equitrans Midstream acquisition in July 2024, EQT describes itself as Americas only large scale, vertically integrated natural gas business (per ir.eqt.com, July 2024). The logic is physical control of gathering, transmission and storage around its own molecules, plus compression that directly moves production. In Q2 2026, EQT reported sales volume of 634 Bcfe, above the high end of guidance, and credited system pressure optimization and compression work that extended flat times on new wells and shallowed base declines (per ir.eqt.com, July 21 2026). For 2026 it raised production guidance by about 90 Bcfe at the midpoint to 2,375 Bcfe to 2,450 Bcfe while cutting full year capital spending guidance by $25M (per ir.eqt.com, July 21 2026). Quarterly capital expenditures were $666M, 9% below the low end of guidance (per ir.eqt.com, July 21 2026).
Vertical integration: why owning the midstream matters
- Gathering and transmission: the Equitrans system, described at the time of the deal as an approximately 2,000 mile pipeline network (per finance.yahoo.com, March 2024), gives EQT firm path from wellhead to premium outlets instead of renting it well by well.
- Cost curve impact: the combined company projected an unlevered NYMEX free cash flow breakeven of about $2.00 per MMBtu plus more than $425M of annual synergies (per ir.eqt.com, July 2024), a claim aimed squarely at low cost Appalachian peers like Range Resources and Antero that lack that integrated pipe.
- Execution leverage: EQT drilled a 29,070 foot lateral, cited as the longest U.S. lateral on record with 37,610 feet of measured depth (per investing.com, July 22 2026), the kind of long lateral program that only works if gathering pressure, compression and takeaway are coordinated.
- Storage and propane: the company also owns and operates propane storage and distribution terminals, a small but telling piece of downstream optionality around seasonal spreads.
Go to market: marketers, utilities, capacity and hedges
EQT does not retail gas to households. It sells natural gas, liquids and oil wholesale, then layers three commercial businesses on top: marketing services, contractual pipeline capacity management, and risk management and hedging. That stack lets it arbitrage basis differentials between Appalachia and Gulf Coast, Midwest and Southeast markets, use the reservoir as de facto storage through tactical curtailments, and lock in prices when the curve spikes. Q2 is illustrative: volumes rose while revenue softness reflected lower realized prices, the classic EQT tradeoff of pushing molecules when peers shut in. Recent headline chatter around data center power demand and long dated gas contracting frames the next leg of this strategy qualitatively, selling reliability and scale to utilities and large load centers rather than just spot molecules.
| Operating scale | FY2023 | FY2024 | FY2025 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Revenues (SEC XBRL) | $6.91B | $5.27B | $8.64B |
| Operating income (SEC XBRL) | $2.31B | $685.30M | $3.25B |
| Operating cash flow | $3.18B | $2.83B | $5.13B |
| Total assets | $25.29B | $39.83B | $41.79B |
The jump from $25.29B to $39.83B in assets between FY2023 and FY2024 is the Equitrans balance sheet landing, with stockholders equity rising from $14.77B to $20.60B and then to $23.75B in FY2025. At a $54.96 share price on September 10 2026, a $34.38B market capitalization and $43.53B enterprise value, EQT is priced as infrastructure backed E&P, not a wildcatter. The operational question is whether integrated compression, long laterals and firm transport can keep volumes above plan without reigniting the -$2.29B annual capital treadmill.
Financials
EQT Corporation is a textbook Appalachian gas compounder on a commodity rollercoaster. Reported Revenues were $8.64B in FY2025, $5.27B in FY2024, $6.91B in FY2023 and $7.50B in FY2022 (EDGAR), a trajectory that tracks Henry Hub more than volumes. The yfinance series, which captures total revenue inclusive of derivatives, tells the same story with more volatility: $8.35B in 2025, $5.22B in 2024, $5.07B in 2023 and $12.14B in 2022 (yfinance). Current trailing revenue growth is still negative at -3.9% (yfinance), which explains why the stock at $54.96 remains 19% below its $68.24 52-week high despite a $47.94 low that held (yfinance).
Margins, earnings and returns
When gas cooperates, operating leverage is violent. Operating Income was $3.25B in FY2025 versus $685.30M in FY2024, $2.31B in FY2023 and $2.72B in FY2022 (EDGAR). Net Income followed at $2.04B in FY2025 versus $230.58M in FY2024, $1.74B in FY2023 and $1.77B in FY2022, after a $1.16B loss in FY2021 (EDGAR). On the yfinance cut, EBITDA was $6.02B in 2025 versus $2.88B in 2024, and Diluted EPS was $3.31 in 2025 versus $0.45 in 2024, $4.22 in 2023 and $4.38 in 2022 (yfinance). Current margins screen elite for an E and P: gross margin of 80.7%, operating margin of 23.4% and profit margin of 29.2% (yfinance). Returns are solid but not software-like, with ROE of 11.1% and ROA of 6.6% (yfinance), reflecting a now bloated post-deal asset base. Valuation prices the cyclicality: trailing P/E of 12.75, forward P/E of 13.96 and EV to EBITDA of 6.22 on an enterprise value of $43.53B and market cap of $34.38B (yfinance), versus a consensus target of $67.38 (yfinance).
Balance sheet and cash conversion
The balance sheet is the Equitrans story. Total Assets were $41.79B in FY2025 versus $39.83B in FY2024 and $25.29B in FY2023 (EDGAR), while Stockholders Equity grew to $23.75B from $20.60B and $14.77B over the same period (EDGAR). Liabilities fell to $14.43B in FY2025 from $15.55B in FY2024 (EDGAR). Total Debt was $7.86B in FY2025 versus $9.37B in FY2024 and $5.84B in FY2023, with Long Term Debt of $7.29B versus $9.00B and $5.50B (yfinance), against Cash of just $110.80M versus $202.09M and $80.98M (EDGAR). Deleveraging has continued into 2026, with total debt of $5.7B as of June 30, 2026, down from nearly $14.0B at the Equitrans close after more than $8.1B repaid since September 2024 (per investing.com, Aug. 12, 2026). Cash conversion is the bull case. Operating Cash Flow was $5.13B in 2025 versus $2.83B in 2024 and $3.18B in 2023 (yfinance), funding Capital Expenditure of $2.29B, $2.25B and $2.02B (yfinance) and leaving Free Cash Flow of $2.84B in 2025 versus $573.26M in 2024 and $1.16B in 2023 (yfinance), with trailing Free Cash Flow now quoted at $2.46B (yfinance). The second quarter of 2026 showed the machine working: sales volume of 634 Bcfe above guidance, capital expenditures of $666M about 9% below guidance, and $330M of quarterly free cash flow taking year to date to $2.16B (per ir.eqt.com, July 21, 2026 and per investing.com, July 22, 2026).
- Capital allocation: dividends first, debt second, buybacks on pause. Cash Dividends Paid were $389.63M in 2025, $326.58M in 2024 and $228.34M in 2023 (yfinance), and management raised the quarterly base dividend by 5% to $0.165 per share alongside a $2.0B repurchase authorization (per stocktitan.net, Feb. 18, 2026). Repurchase of Capital Stock was $0.00 in both 2025 and 2024 versus $201.03M in 2023 and $409.49M in 2022 (yfinance).
- What to watch: durability of the $3.25B operating income rebound (EDGAR), whether $5.13B of operating cash flow can sustain $2.29B of capex plus debt retirement (yfinance), and 2026 production guidance raised by about 90 Bcfe after the strong second quarter (per finance.yahoo.com, July 22, 2026).
| Metric | FY2022 | FY2023 | FY2024 | FY2025 |

Competitive Landscape & Moat
EQT Corporation at $54.96, a $34.38B market cap and $43.53B enterprise value, is the Appalachian Basin pure play fighting for the title of largest US natural gas producer. The company employs 1,523 people, sells natural gas, natural gas liquids and oil to marketers, utilities and industrial customers in Appalachia, and bundles marketing, pipeline capacity management and hedging around that flow. The market prices it as a cyclical cash compounder, with trailing P/E of 12.75, forward P/E of 13.96 and EV/EBITDA of 6.22, a strong_buy consensus and a $67.38 mean target against a 52 week range of $47.94 to $68.24, after a 8.7% one year and 195.6% five year return.
Main rivals: Expand, Antero, Range, CNX
The relevant set is Appalachian gas, not diversified oil. Expand Energy (Nasdaq: EXE), created by the Chesapeake and Southwestern merger in October 2024, is the volume leader by most 2025 to 2026 scorecards. Expand was described as the largest pure play producer at 7.44 Bcfe per day (per 247wallst.com, May 2026) and produced 7.2 Bcf per day of gas equivalent in the second quarter after a $7.4B merger the prior year (per argusmedia.com, September 2025). Antero Resources, Range Resources and CNX Resources are the Marcellus and Utica specialists, with EOG Resources and Comstock as the diversified and Haynesville points of comparison that surface whenever gas prices or data center demand dominate headlines.
- Expand Energy: scale and Haynesville plus Appalachia diversification, about 10% more 2025 volume than EQT in third party 2026 comparisons (per blog.metalpilot.com, July 2026).
- Antero Resources: liquids rich Appalachian producer, roughly 36% liquids by volume versus EQT at about 5%, which helps in oil linked tapes and hurts on midstream cost (per blog.metalpilot.com, July 2026).
- Range Resources and CNX Resources: lean Marcellus operators, smaller at under 900 Bcfe of annual guidance each in 2026 comparisons, competing on breakeven and buyback rather than absolute scale (per blog.metalpilot.com, July 2026).
- EOG, Comstock: the oil levered and Gulf Coast gas alternatives that rotate into favor when oil outperforms dry gas.
Where EQT leads and lags
EQT leads on integrated Appalachian scale and 2025 operating leverage. SEC XBRL revenue was $8.64B in FY2025 versus $5.27B in FY2024 and $6.91B in FY2023, with operating income of $3.25B versus $685.30M and net income of $2.04B versus $230.58M. Cash flow statement free cash flow was $2.84B in 2025 versus $573.26M in 2024 on operating cash flow of $5.13B and capex of $2.29B, while the valuation screen shows trailing free cash flow of $2.46B. Margins explain the multiple: 80.7% gross margin, 23.4% operating margin, 29.2% profit margin, with 11.1% ROE and 6.6% ROA. Operations reinforced that in Q2 2026 with sales of 634 Bcfe above the high end of guidance, capex of $666M, 9% below the low end of guidance, and total per unit operating costs of $1.03 per Mcfe at the low end of guidance (per ir.eqt.com, July 2026), plus $330M of free cash flow despite gas averaging $2.89 per MMBtu (per finance.yahoo.com, July 2026). Management then raised 2026 production guidance by roughly 90 Bcfe at the midpoint (per finance.yahoo.com, July 2026).
EQT lags on concentration and commodity purity. Revenue growth was negative 3.9% on the screen, total debt was still $7.86B with long term debt of $7.29B and cash of only $110.80M at end 2025, even after cutting liabilities to $14.43B from $15.55B and growing equity to $23.75B on assets of $41.79B. Expand offers two basin optionality where EQT is almost entirely Marcellus and Utica, and Antero offers liquids torque where EQT is overwhelmingly dry gas. Q1 2026 illustrates the gap: 618 Bcfe of production above guidance at a $5.08 per Mcfe realized price and record low $1.09 per Mcfe operating costs (per 247wallst.com, May 2026), elite efficiency, but still full exposure to Appalachian basis.
Durable moat: contiguous scale, pipes, contracts
The moat is not brand, it is position and pipe. Contiguous Marcellus and Utica acreage, assembled since its 1888 founding as Equitable Resources, drives longer laterals, pad drilling and compression led shallowing of base declines, the mechanism cited for Q2 2026 base outperformance. Vertical integration through the Equitrans Midstream combination, cited as a differentiator versus Expand (per 247wallst.com, May 2026), plus owned propane storage and firm transmission, lowers gathering, processing and transmission cost per Mcfe and gives EQT marketing optimization and curtailment strategy that beat guidance on a $0.67 differential even as basis widened (per ir.eqt.com, July 2026). Switching costs accrue to utilities and LNG buyers that need reliable baseload molecules and long term contracting, including the 10 year gas deal and data center demand themes in recent coverage, not to wellhead buyers. Regulation cuts both ways, with Pennsylvania permitting and federal pipeline approvals as the barrier that protects incumbents with approved corridors and punishes anyone needing new greenfield capacity. With 1,492 institutions holding 95.8% and insiders holding 0.9%, the shareholder base already treats it as the low cost Appalachian utility for gas volume, funded by dividends of $389.63M in 2025 and no buyback that year after $201.03M and $409.49M of repurchases in 2023 and 2022.
| SEC XBRL, $ | FY2023 | FY2024 | FY2025 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Revenues | $6.91B | $5.27B | $8.64B |
| Operating Income | $2.31B | $685.30M | $3.25B |
| Net Income | $1.74B | $230.58M | $2.04B |

| Total Liabilities | $10.50B | $15.55B | $14.43B |
Verdict & Valuation
Pass at $54.96. EQT is the best factory in Appalachia priced as if $2.04B of net income is normal, when $230.58M was normal twelve months ago. The SEC EDGAR XBRL facts decide it: Revenues of $8.64B in FY2025 versus $5.27B in FY2024, Operating Income of $3.25B versus $685.30M, Net Income of $2.04B versus $230.58M. Free cash flow did the same snap, to $2.84B from $573.26M on Operating Cash Flow of $5.13B against Capital Expenditure of $2.29B. You are asked to pay $34.38B in market cap and $43.53B in enterprise value, or 12.75x trailing earnings, 13.96x forward earnings and 6.22x EV to EBITDA, for negative 3.9% revenue growth where forward pays more than trailing because the Street expects earnings to shrink.
Why the bull math does not close here
Operations are elite, that is not the debate. Sales volume of 634 Bcfe came in above the high end of guidance on strong wells and lower curtailments, with 2026 production guidance raised by about 90 Bcfe while full year capex guidance was cut by $25M (per finance.yahoo.com, July 2026). Capex of $666M ran 9% below the low end of guidance (per investing.com, July 2026) and unit costs held to $1.03 per Mcfe (per ir.eqt.com, July 2026). No Haynesville or Permian gas peer that lives on spot and Gulf Coast netbacks can match that Appalachian integration of production, gathering, transmission and marketing on a $41.79B asset base run by 1,523 employees.
But Q2 2026 also proved the bear case in one quarter. Adjusted earnings were $0.39 per share versus a $0.41 consensus and revenues of $1.81B fell 29.2% year over year despite an 11.7% rise in sales volume, because realized prices fell (per finance.yahoo.com, July 2026). Free cash flow attributable to EQT was $330M despite gas averaging only $2.89 per MMBtu (per finance.yahoo.com, July 2026). That is the treadmill: $7.86B of total debt including $7.29B long term against $110.80M of cash, $14.43B of liabilities on Stockholders Equity of $23.75B, and $389.63M of annual dividends must all be carried by a molecule whose prior-quarter realized price was disclosed as $2.65 per Mcfe (per ir.eqt.com, July 2026). The celebrated 80.7% gross margin, 23.4% operating margin, 29.2% profit margin, 11.1% ROE and 6.6% ROA are peak price arithmetic, not contracted annuities.

| Operating Income | $685.30M | $3.25B |
| Net Income | $230.58M | $2.04B |

Valuation: no discount for the risk you take
At $54.96 on September 10, 2026, EQT sits $13.28 below its $68.24 52 week high and only $7.02 above its $47.94 low, after an 8.7% one year gain and a 195.6% five year run. The $67.38 mean target and strong_buy rating from 1,492 institutions holding 95.8% of shares imply more than 22% upside, but that target needs gas cooperation, not just execution. EOG Resources and Comstock show the same qualitative setup in recent earnings chatter, higher gas prices plus data center hope, yet EQT alone concentrates almost everything in the Appalachian Basin where basis, curtailments and transport decide the realized price.
The power story is real but not yet cash. Buyers for about 1.4 Bcf per day enabling 2% to 3% base growth (per spglobal.com, July 2025) and the 10 year deal to supply 325,000 Dth per day to the planned CPV Shay Energy Center in West Virginia, expected as early as 2031 with pricing linked to PJM power markets (per finance.yahoo.com, July 2026), plus the Homer City and Shippingport redevelopments in Pennsylvania, could reprice the molecule away from in basin indexes. Could is the word. None of it pays $2.29B of annual capex today.
What flips this to Buy: proof that PJM linked load actually clears at a premium in cash results, not press releases, or that low unit costs plus compression led shallower declines let EQT grow volumes and still print strong quarterly operating cash flow with soft spot prices. Until then, wait for weakness toward the $47.94 low to underwrite $5.27B revenue and $230.58M earnings as the downside, not $8.64B and $2.04B as the base.
The Bull Case
- Appalachian scale at factory cost: EQT, founded in 1888 and headquartered in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, runs exploration, production, gathering, transmission, marketing and propane storage on a $41.79B asset base with just 1,523 employees, selling into the Appalachian Basin to marketers, utilities and industrials. It is described as the largest independent U.S. natural gas producer (per finance.yahoo.com, October 2025), which matters because scale plus vertical integration is how it prints an 80.7% gross margin and 23.4% operating margin while holding Q2 total per unit operating costs to $1.03 per Mcfe, at the low end of guidance (per ir.eqt.com, July 2026). That quarter delivered 634 Bcfe of sales volume, above the high end of guidance on strong well performance and lower curtailments (per ir.eqt.com, July 2026), including drilling the longest lateral in shale history at more than 29,000 feet while 100% in zone (per ir.eqt.com, July 2026). Haynesville and Permian gas names cannot match that combination of in basin demand proximity, owned midstream pressure optimization and sub Appalachian cost structure.
- 2025 was the earnings snapback: SEC EDGAR XBRL facts are authoritative here: Revenues of $8.64B in FY2025 versus $5.27B in FY2024, Net Income of $2.04B versus $230.58M, and Operating Income of $3.25B versus $685.30M, with yfinance Diluted EPS of $3.31 and EBITDA of $6.02B. That converts to a 29.2% profit margin, 11.1% ROE and 6.6% ROA on Stockholders Equity of $23.75B. Momentum carried into 2026 with H1 net income of $1.70B, or $2.70 per diluted share, on operating revenues of $5.19B, driven by higher gas sales and lower interest and legal reserves (per stocktitan.net, July 2026). Q2 alone produced Adjusted EBITDA of $1.07B, up from $1.03B a year ago, and Adjusted operating cash flow of $1.01B, up from $794M, despite realized prices falling (per finance.yahoo.com, July 2026).
- A delevered balance sheet that can return cash: FY2025 Total Debt of $7.86B was down from $9.37B in FY2024 against Equity of $23.75B and Cash of $110.80M, with Total Liabilities of $14.43B down from $15.55B. Operating Cash Flow of $5.13B covered Capital Expenditure of $2.29B to leave Free Cash Flow of $2.84B, while Cash Dividends Paid were $389.63M with zero buyback in the yfinance cash flow table, leaving massive headroom to restart repurchases. Deleveraging accelerated in 2026 to $5.7B of total debt and $5.5B of net debt exiting Q2 (per ir.eqt.com, July 2026) after $2.12B of senior note repayments that cut debt principal to $5.70B in H1 (per stocktitan.net, July 2026). Q2 still generated $330M of free cash flow attributable to EQT despite gas averaging only $2.89 per MMBtu (per finance.yahoo.com, July 2026), and paid $103M in dividends (per finance.yahoo.com, July 2026).
- Contracted electrons reprice the molecule: EQT is not growing into spot, it is growing into load, with buyers for about 1.4 Bcf per day enabling 2% to 3% base growth rather than uncontracted spot sales (per spglobal.com, July 2025). The backyard wins are the Homer City Energy Campus and the former Bruce Mansfield coal plant redevelopment at Shippingport into the Shippingport Power Station (per wpxi.com, April 2026), with management citing a robust pipeline of multiple Bcf per day of supply plus gathering opportunities under negotiation (per wpxi.com, April 2026). The cleanest proof is the 10 year deal to supply 325,000 Dth per day to the planned CPV Shay Energy Center in West Virginia, expected as early as 2031, with pricing linked to PJM power markets to capture a premium to local gas indexes (per finance.yahoo.com, July 2026). That is structural multiple expansion fuel if data center, power and LNG pull through, a theme echoed qualitatively in recent earnings coverage around higher gas prices and data center demand.
- Operational beat plus Street discount: At $54.96 on September 10, 2026, EQT trades well below its $68.24 52 week high and above its $47.94 low, with a $34.38B market cap and $43.53B enterprise value at 6.22x EV to EBITDA, 12.75x trailing P/E and 13.96x forward P/E. The analyst mean target of $67.38 with a strong_buy recommendation implies more than 22% upside to that $54.96 price, backed by 1,492 institutions holding 95.8% of shares. The rerating trigger is execution: Q2 capex of $666M came in 9% below the low end of guidance (per ir.eqt.com, July 2026), 2026 production guidance was raised by about 90 Bcfe on compression led shallower declines while full year capex guidance was cut by $25M (per finance.yahoo.com, July 2026), and the 5 year return of 195.6% versus an 8.7% 1 year return shows the market still prices it as a cyclical gas lever, not a contracted power supplier.
The Bear Case
- You pay a peak multiple for trough commodity. At $54.96 on September 10, 2026, EQT carries a $34.38B market cap and $43.53B enterprise value, priced at 12.75x trailing earnings, 13.96x forward earnings and 6.22x EV/EBITDA. Forward above trailing means you pay more for earnings the Street expects to shrink. The stock sits $13.28 below its $68.24 52 week high but only $7.02 above its $47.94 low, after a 195.6% five year run and an 8.7% one year gain, with the $67.38 consensus target and strong_buy rating leaving no room for a gas miss.
- There is no growth, only gas beta. Revenue growth is negative 3.9%. SEC XBRL Revenues tell the story: $7.50B in FY2022, $6.91B in FY2023, $5.27B in FY2024, $8.64B in FY2025. Four years of whiplash to end roughly where commodity prices put you. Even the celebrated 80.7% gross margin, 23.4% operating margin and 29.2% profit margin, with 11.1% ROE and 6.6% ROA, are peak price arithmetic, not operating leverage you can bank.
- Earnings vaporize when gas dips. SEC XBRL Net Income Loss runs from a $1.16B loss in FY2021 to $1.77B in FY2022, $1.74B in FY2023, $230.58M in FY2024 and $2.04B in FY2025. Operating Income Loss runs from a $1.36B loss to $2.72B, $2.31B, $685.30M and $3.25B on the same path. Free cash flow does the same: $2.07B to $1.16B to $573.26M to $2.84B, on $2.29B of annual capital expenditure. The second quarter of 2026 proved the sensitivity, with adjusted earnings of $0.39 missing the $0.41 consensus as the realized price fell to $2.65 per Mcfe from $2.81 while futures averaged $3.02, down 17.5% year over year (per reuters.com, July 2026), spot averaged just $2.89 per MMBtu and quarterly free cash flow was only $330M (per finance.yahoo.com, July 2026).
- One basin decides everything. EQT explores, produces, gathers and transmits almost entirely in the Appalachian Basin, selling gas, liquids and oil to marketers, utilities and industrial customers there, plus marketing, pipeline capacity management and propane terminals. That concentration showed in the second quarter of 2026 with 634 Bcfe of sales volume (per ir.eqt.com, July 2026) at a realized differential of negative $0.67 and unit operating costs of $1.03 per Mcfe (per ir.eqt.com, July 2026). When Appalachian basis blows out, EQT curtails, discounts or pays for transport that Permian and Haynesville rivals with Gulf Coast LNG optionality do not. Bull talk about long term gas deals and data center demand does not change where the molecules price today.
- A levered balance sheet funds a treadmill. Total debt is $7.86B including $7.29B long term against just $110.80M of cash, with $14.43B of liabilities on $41.79B of assets. Assets jumped from $25.29B in FY2023 to $39.83B in FY2024, a deal inflated base that must now be defended. Annual operating cash flow of $5.13B must cover $2.29B of capital expenditure plus $389.63M of dividends before debt reduction, in a business that already needed strategic curtailments to manage price. Insiders own 0.9% while institutions hold 95.8% across 1,492 holders, crowded long exposure to a single commodity call with 1,523 employees managing the largest domestic gas machine.
EQT is a superb operator of a terrible price. You are underwriting $8.64B revenue, $2.04B net income and $2.84B free cash flow as normal, when history says $5.27B revenue, $230.58M net income and $573.26M free cash flow are one mild winter away.
Key Risks
- 1. Appalachian natural gas price and basis risk: revenue and earnings reset with NYMEX and local differentials.
- 2. Leverage after the scale build: $7.86B of total debt and a $43.53B enterprise value against $110.80M of cash.
- 3. Single basin concentration and pipes: Appalachian curtailments, compression and permitting decide volumes.
- 4. Capital intensity through the cycle: $2.29B of annual capex to defend $5.13B of operating cash flow.
- 5. Low cost curve or low return: $54.96 pays 12.75 times trailing earnings for 11.1% ROE and negative near term revenue growth.
1. Gas price leverage cuts both ways
EQT explores, produces, gathers and transmits hydrocarbons and sells natural gas, natural gas liquids and oil to marketers, utilities and industrial customers in the Appalachian Basin. That is a gas beta machine. SEC EDGAR revenues were $7.50B in FY2022, $6.91B in FY2023, $5.27B in FY2024 and $8.64B in FY2025, while net income swung from a $1.16B loss in FY2021 to $1.77B in FY2022, $1.74B in FY2023, $230.58M in FY2024 and $2.04B in FY2025. Operating income shows the same torque, $2.72B in FY2022, $2.31B in FY2023, $685.30M in FY2024 and $3.25B in FY2025.
Management has leaned into the exposure rather than hedging it away, with the company described as completely unhedged in 2026 and beyond amid a bullish price view, per naturalgasintel.com, Feb 2025. The second quarter of 2026 shows why that matters: sales volume was 634 Bcfe, above the high end of guidance, per ir.eqt.com, July 2026, yet average realized price was $2.65 per Mcfe, down from $2.81 a year earlier, per ir.eqt.com, July 2026, with natural gas averaging just $2.89 per MMBtu in the quarter, per investing.com, July 2026. Adjusted EPS was $0.39 versus a $0.41 consensus and revenue was $1.81 billion versus $1.83 billion expected, per finance.yahoo.com, July 2026, despite that volume beat. Unlike Permian oil peers that can hide behind liquids pricing, EQT lives on dry gas realizations plus a $(0.67) differential, per ir.eqt.com, July 2026, and on marketing optimization to offset widening in basin basis.
What would confirm this risk: a sustained drop in NYMEX with widening Appalachian basis that pushes realized prices materially lower and forces renewed strategic curtailments of the kind seen in 10 Bcfe to 15 Bcfe curtailments discussed for 2026, per ir.eqt.com, April 2026.
2. A bigger balance sheet that still has to be paid for
EQT ended 2025 with $41.79B of assets, $14.43B of liabilities and $23.75B of stockholders equity, versus $25.29B, $10.50B and $14.77B in 2023 and $39.83B, $15.55B and $20.60B in 2024. Total debt was $7.86B in 2025, down from $9.37B in 2024 but up from $5.84B in 2023, with $7.29B long term. Cash was $110.80M in 2025 versus $202.09M in 2024 and $1.46B in 2022. At $54.96, the market values equity at $34.38B and the enterprise at $43.53B, or 6.22 times EV to EBITDA.
Deleveraging is real but thinly cushioned. In 2025 EQT generated $5.13B of operating cash flow, spent $2.29B on capex, produced $2.84B of free cash flow on the cash flow statement, with trailing free cash flow quoted at $2.46B, and paid $389.63M in cash dividends with $0.00 of capital stock repurchased. Any sustained gas downdraft hits the exact line that funds debt reduction, dividends and the $2,040 million to $2,190 million maintenance capex program plus growth capex now guided for 2026, per ir.eqt.com, July 2026.
What would confirm this risk: total debt stalls near the FY2025 level of $7.86B while cash stays near the FY2025 level of $110.80M and free cash flow falls back toward the $573.26M level of 2024 instead of the $2.84B level of 2025.
3. One basin, one pipeline system, one regulatory regime
With 1,523 employees headquartered in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, EQT is the Appalachian scale operator, with owned gathering, transmission, propane storage and distribution, and contractual pipeline capacity management. Scale lowers unit costs, total per unit operating costs were $1.03 per Mcfe in the second quarter of 2026, at the low end of guidance, per ir.eqt.com, July 2026, and capex was $666 million, 9% below the low end of guidance, per ir.eqt.com, July 2026. It also concentrates outage, pressure, permitting and egress risk.
Production outperformance in 2026 came from system pressure optimization and compression that extended flat times and shallowed base declines, plus fewer price related curtailments than expected, per finance.yahoo.com, July 2026, which allowed a 90 Bcfe midpoint lift to 2,375 Bcfe to 2,450 Bcfe for full year 2026, per ir.eqt.com, July 2026. The mirror image was visible into year end 2025, when EQT guided fourth quarter sales to 550 Bcfe to 600 Bcfe after 634 Bcfe in the third quarter, including 15 Bcfe to 20 Bcfe of strategic October curtailments tied to in basin pricing volatility, per reuters.com, Oct 2025. Appalachian peers face the same Mountain Valley and takeaway constraints, Haynesville has inventory depth questions and Permian has had periods with no new gas egress, per naturalgasintel.com, Feb 2025, but EQT cannot rotate capital to another basin when Appalachia basis blows out.
What would confirm this risk: another quarter where curtailments, compression downtime or basis driven shut ins cause volumes to miss the 570 Bcfe to 620 Bcfe quarterly cadence EQT has used for 2026, per ir.eqt.com, July 2026.
4. The treadmill: decline, TILs and cost control
Shale does not coast. EQT must turn in line 30 to 45 net wells in a quarter and 125 to 150 in a year to hold the wedge, a cadence laid out across 2026 guidance, per ir.eqt.com, Feb 2026 and per ir.eqt.com, July 2026. In 2025 that cost $2.29B of capex against $5.13B of operating cash flow, after $2.25B against $2.83B in 2024 and $2.02B against $3.18B in 2023. Gross margin of 80.7%, operating margin of 23.4% and profit margin of 29.2% look fortress like until you recall operating income collapsed to $685.30M in FY2024 from $2.31B in FY2023 on $5.27B of revenues.
Year over year revenue growth is currently negative 3.9%, and the stock at $54.96 sits between a $47.94 52 week low and a $68.24 high, with a $67.38 mean target and a strong buy recommendation. The 5 year return of 195.6% versus a 1 year return of 8.7% already prices durable execution. Service cost, sand, water, labor or midstream fees can erase the $1.03 per Mcfe cost advantage quickly.
What would confirm this risk: maintenance capex drifts above the high end of guidance while per unit operating costs rise materially above guidance and free cash flow attributable to EQT falls back below the $330 million second quarter 2026 level despite higher volumes, per finance.yahoo.com, July 2026.
5. Valuation leaves no room for a gas tape
At $54.96, EQT trades at 12.75 times trailing earnings and 13.96 times forward earnings with a 6.22 times EV to EBITDA multiple, 11.1% ROE and 6.6% ROA. That is cheaper than oily large caps on earnings but expensive for a single commodity Appalachian gas producer if $2.65 per Mcfe realizations persist. Institutions own 95.81% of shares across 1,492 holders, insiders hold 0.90%, so de risking can be crowded when gas turns.
The dividend, $389.63M paid in 2025 versus $326.58M in 2024 and $228.34M in 2023, is covered by 2025 free cash flow but was built in a $8.64B revenue year, not a $5.27B year like 2024. With $0.00 of buybacks in 2024 and 2025 after $201.03M in 2023 and $409.49M in 2022, shareholders are long the gas tape, not a shrink the float story.
What would confirm this risk: the stock retreats toward the $47.94 52 week low while forward earnings estimates are cut, pushing the forward P/E above the trailing 12.75 multiple even as the price falls.
Lessons
EQT Corporation at $54.96, with a $34.38B market cap and $43.53B enterprise value, is a textbook case in commodity leverage, scale buying, and cash discipline. Founded in 1888 and headquartered in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, selling natural gas, natural gas liquids and oil to marketers, utilities and industrial customers in the Appalachian Basin, it shows how a focused basin champion behaves differently from a diversified major or a Permian oil peer.
1. Never annualize the spike, never bury the trough
SEC EDGAR is brutal here. Revenues were $7.50B in FY2022, then $6.91B in FY2023, then $5.27B in FY2024, then $8.64B in FY2025. Operating income tracked the same whiplash: $2.72B in FY2022, $685.30M in FY2024, $3.25B in FY2025. Net income did the same: $1.77B, then $1.74B, then $230.58M, then $2.04B. The lesson versus diversified integrated oils, which smooth gas with oil, refining and chemicals: for a pure Appalachian gas producer, through cycle underwriting matters more than any single year P/E. Yfinance flags the same point with negative 3.9% revenue growth year over year even as FY2025 looked like a breakout.
2. Buy scale, then prove you can delever it
Assets went from $25.29B in FY2023 to $39.83B in FY2024 to $41.79B in FY2025 per SEC EDGAR, while liabilities went from $10.50B to $15.55B and back down to $14.43B. Stockholders equity expanded from $14.77B to $20.60B to $23.75B. Yfinance shows the financing path: total debt at $9.37B cut to $7.86B, long term debt at $9.00B cut to $7.29B, with cash of only $110.80M. Unlike a midstream toll collector that adds pipelines for fee based cash flow, an E&P that bulks up in basin has to convert acquired inventory into free cash and debt paydown. EQT did the second half in FY2025, which is why the equity survived a balance sheet step change that would have stranded a weaker operator.
3. Software margins still require steel in the ground
Yfinance reports 80.7% gross margin, 23.4% operating margin, 29.2% profit margin, with 11.1% ROE and 6.6% ROA. That looks like a technology business, and it reflects low cost Marcellus style geology plus gathering, transmission, marketing and hedging integration. Contrast with dry gas peers without owned gathering or with higher cost basins: the margin gap is structural, not trading. But cash tells the real story. In FY2025, operating cash flow was $5.13B against capital expenditure of $2.29B, leaving free cash flow of $2.84B and cash dividends paid of $389.63M. The transferable rule: screen E&Ps on operating cash less maintenance capex and hedging drag, not on gross profit. EQT passes because volume growth did not require a proportional capex explosion.
4. Gas leverage gets a single digit multiple, not a growth multiple
The market prices that cyclicality. EV/EBITDA is 6.22, trailing P/E is 12.75, forward P/E is higher at 13.96, implying lower expected forward earnings. The stock at $54.96 sits below its 52 week high of $68.24 and above its 52 week low of $47.94, with a 1 year return of 8.7% against a 5 year return of 195.6% and a mean analyst target of $67.38 with a strong buy rating. Recent headline chatter around long term gas contracting and data center demand captures the bull thesis qualitatively, that Appalachian molecules earn a reliability premium, but the multiple says investors still treat that as optionality, not contracted tech revenue. Lesson: for commodity producers, re rating comes from sustained free cash and a lower debt load, not from narrative alone. Pay mid single digit EBITDA, demand cash return, let the spike be upside.
